Is Invisalign Right for Me?

A straighter, more dazzling smile can be accomplished without old-fashioned metal braces. Really? Yes, it’s true. Invisalign are clear plastic aligners that gently shift your teeth into their proper position throughout treatment. Do you know the best thing about these aligners? Since they are made of clear plastic, they are virtually invisible while you are wearing it. Plus, there are no uncomfortable brackets and rubber bands to deal with.

At Rio Rancho Smiles in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, we offer the treatment for teens and adults who want to change the look of their smile in style. We customize the trays to fit your teeth appropriately, so you are left with gorgeous results. Read ahead and see if Invisalign is right for you.

Am I a Candidate?

Before you consider Invisalign, it’s important to note that the treatment isn’t right for everybody. For example, if your teeth are extremely misaligned or if you have a very pronounced overbite or underbite, the treatment may not be suitable for you. The best candidates are people with:

  • Slightly crooked teeth
  • Underbites
  • Overbites
  • Crossbites
  • Crowded teeth

During a consultation at our practice, one of our dentists will determine if you meet the criteria. If not, you might be considered for metal braces to transform your smile.

What is the Treatment Process Like?

Once you’re approved for Invisalign, the dentist uses a scanner to obtain a 3D model of your teeth. Your doctor will send the model to a lab to fabricate the series of aligners that you will wear for the duration of treatment. Once they’re finished, your doctor will check to ensure the trays fit your teeth securely.

For the first few days or so, the trays might feel uncomfortable as the teeth begin to move. After a while, you’ll become accustomed to them. If you continue to experience discomfort, you can check with your dentist to see if the aligners need to be adjusted.

When you wear the aligners as directed, your teeth are shifted into the correct position. You typically wear one tray for about two weeks before moving on to another one. While you should wear an aligner for 20-22 hours daily, you can remove it to eat, drink, brush, and floss. Patients must visit their doctor about every six to eight weeks, so he or she can check your progress.

How Long Does it Take?

Each patient is different, so the length of treatment varies among individuals. Many people begin to see some results in a matter of a few weeks. The typical treatment length, however, is six months or longer.

What Do I Do After Treatment?

After you complete treatment, you can expect a radiant smile that you’ll love to show off. To maintain the look of your new, transformed teeth, you need to wear a retainer. The dentist will customize a retainer that you will wear for some time following the treatment. The retainer ensures that your teeth remain in place and don’t shift back.

Individuals also need to practice good oral hygiene to keep their teeth looking good and healthy. Additionally, you should visit your dentist for regular check-ups to keep your smile at its best.
